Packaging EPR for online sellers

Most EPRGo merchants will first meet packaging rules: shipping boxes, product wraps, fillers and labels. Those materials can be in scope even when the product inside is not an electronics or battery item.

What “placing on the market” means in practice

If packaged goods are made available in a country for the first time — including by distance contract to end users — packaging EPR can apply. The EU packaging regulation requires producers to be registered in each Member State where they make packaging or packaged products available for the first time, before that making available happens.

What shops usually have to organise

• National producer registration
• A local authorised representative, when the seller is not established in that country
• Membership of a collective or individual EPR system
• Quantity reports, often annually, sometimes with in-year updates
